Capitol Wurlitzer Restoration Reaches Major Milestone

Capitol Wurlitzer Restoration Reaches Major Milestone

The restoration of the historic Capitol Wurlitzer has taken a significant step forward, with project partners RMIT University and Melbourne Theatre Organ confirming that all major approvals and preparations are now in place for the next stage of works.

Funding for the project has been successfully secured, all required approvals have been received, and the design phase has been completed. A contractor has also been appointed to carry out the reconstruction works.

Works Begin in June

Reconstruction of the organ chambers is scheduled to commence in June 2026. These works are a crucial part of preparing the space for the return of the historic Wurlitzer organ, with installation of the instrument to follow once the chambers are complete.

The project marks an important chapter in preserving and celebrating one of Melbourne’s most iconic theatre organs. The Capitol Wurlitzer is not only a remarkable musical instrument, but also a significant part of the city’s cultural and architectural heritage.

A Collaborative Effort

The milestone reflects years of planning, advocacy, and partnership between RMIT University, Melbourne Theatre Organ, heritage specialists, contractors, and supporters from the wider community.

Mark Arnold, Melbourne Theatre Organ’s Capitol Wurlitzer Project Lead welcomed the announcement, saying:

“This is an incredibly exciting stage for the Capitol Wurlitzer restoration. After years of planning and collaboration, it’s wonderful to see the project moving into the construction phase. We’re looking forward to the day this magnificent instrument can once again be heard and enjoyed by the community.”

Looking Ahead

As chamber works begin, the project team will continue to provide updates on progress and the next stages of the restoration. The ultimate goal is to see the Capitol Wurlitzer fully installed, restored, and once again filling the Capitol Theatre with its distinctive sound.

Further updates will be shared through the Melbourne Theatre Organ’s website and social media channels.
